Our commitment to developing Christian character

Faith isn’t just what we believe; it is how we live and what we do. At the center of our commitment to service is the conviction that God calls us to be “doers of the word and not hearers only.” (James 1:22) This is what our Character-in-Action curriculum is all about: exercising the muscles of Christian character, not only by listening to the truth, but also by living the truth.

An Education for Head, Heart, & Hands

K-12 students at Immanuel Christian School serve on our campus, in our community, and around the world. These regular initiatives are a meaningful way to help our students invest in the lives of others and is a very real extension of the living curriculum embraced by the families of our school.

Whether it is a second grade visit to a neighboring retirement center, middle school students serving as buddies at local public schools, or the high school service day, ICS students serve throughout the school year.

Community service is a graduation requirement, and many high school students choose to go above and beyond in their commitment to service.

Students serve throughout the school year, and reflect on their experiences via journaling and classroom discussions. In addition to these service initiatives, each level of the school focuses on character traits to grow in our students.

The goal is not just for students to grow in knowledge, but also in wisdom, and in the fruits of the spirit, embodying and displaying the character of Christ to the world around them.

Service Initiatives that Grow Confidence & Character

INTERGENERATIONAL SERVICE

Visiting & Encouraging Seniors

Kindergarten shares lunch and Bible verses with senior citizens via the IBC Grand Life ministry, while second grade shares school work and special talents as they develop sweet relationships with our neighbors at Aarondale Retirement Center. In third grade, students head down the street to Leewood Nursing Care to give encouraging notes and play games with residents, many of whom receive very few visitors.

Investing in Our Community

Serving as Book Buddies

Grades 6 – 8 regularly visit local elementary schools to spend time with first and second graders, many of whom are still learning English. Our students read to them, play games, and help them with their schoolwork. Students and buddies alike look forward to these visits each month.

Caring for First Responders

Serving at Local Fire Stations

In grade five, students visit local fire stations to help clean up and pay tribute to our first reponders (washing the fire trucks is always a highlight!). Students also create care packages for local law enforcement officers, including a note and a prayer.

Serving Around the World

A MIssions Trip to Kenya

In junior or senior year, students travel to Kenya. There, they learn about local ministries and deliver much-needed supplies to the Kibera slum. Most of the week is spent serving our sister school in Camp Brethren, improving the school facilities, spending time with students, leading worship, and providing very basic medical care.
