Fine Arts in Middle School
Developing creative skills and interests
As students enter middle school, they have opportunities to explore and develop their God-given gifts through a variety of fine arts electives. Students in grades 5–6 may choose from band, orchestra, choir, or drama, while students in grades 7–8 can continue building their skills through electives such as band, orchestra, choir, and studio art. These courses encourage creativity, collaboration, and artistic excellence while helping students grow in confidence and use their talents to glorify God.
Band
Middle school band develops musicality, confidence, leadership, responsibility, and high standards of excellence and character. Students may choose from a wide array of wind, brass, and percussion instruments as they learn learn basic music notation, instrument specific skills, and ensemble performance techniques. There are multiple performance opportunities throughout the school year.
In addition to band, other instrumental electives may be available, such as ukulele or hand chimes.
Orchestra
Students can choose either violin, viola, or cello and over the course of the school year, work to build skills in proper instrumental technique, music theory, rhythm practice, and ear training. Through individual learning and ensemble playing, students grow in confidence, collaborative teamwork, and hearts for ministry and service. There are several performance opportunities throughout the year where students are able to share and hone their musical skills.
Choir
The goal of the middle school choir is to worship the Lord in song with excellence. As part of the course, students develop skills in vocal production, music literacy, ensemble, musicianship, and much more. There are several performance opportunities over the course of the year where students can showcase their learning. Through choir, students discover the joy of making music and find it an integral mode of expression in worship and daily life.
Studio Art
The Studio Art elective provides students with a working knowledge and understanding of core foundational principles required to design and complete any great work of art. Students experience theory balanced with practice and learn art history from a Christian perspective to deepen understanding. Students are taught with encouragement, feedback, and flexibility to cultivate deep-rooted creativity and developed craft, while also exploring ways to deepen the meaning of their own artwork and recognize art and design in everyday life.
Special Events
Annual concerts, showcases, and exhibits provide an opportunity for students to showcase their skills and develop their stage presene. A particularly treasured tradition, the annual Talent Show puts middle schoolers on the stage in fun and creative ways to showcase their talents for their peers.
