Academic Honor Roll for 3rd Quarter
Congratulations to those students who have made the Honor Roll for middle school (grades 6-8) for the 3rd quarter. To qualify for 1st Honors, students must have an academic average of 95% or above and satisfactory citizenship. For 2nd Honors, students must have an academic average of 90-94% and satisfactory citizenship. A list of students who made the Honor Roll is attached.

We thank you for your support! ICS raised $877 for the 8th grade class gift. The 8th graders look forward to announcing the gift at graduation!
Parent Service Hours Due May 15
Please record your Parent Service Hours before May 15. To do so, log into ParentsWeb, click on Family Information and then your name tab. Click on Service Hours, then “ADD” on the first line for the current school year. Select your service description, enter the hours, note the task and the contact person (in “Verified By”) for whom you worked. Parents in grades K-8 should serve 20 hours total. Parents who enrolled their children after September should pro-rate their required hours at the rate of 2 hours per month for grades K-8. Single parents serve half the number of required hours. Parents who have not turned in their hours by the end of the school year will be billed for the unserved hours. Please contact Sharon Dotson if you have any questions.
2015-2016 School Supply Online Ordering
ICS’s partnership with Cornerstone Office Solutions is now expanding to provide parents and students an easy-to-order supply kit for the new school year. This year each kit includes even more of the required supplies for every grade level. Just place your order online and the kits will be delivered to your child’s classroom in time for the ICS Meet ‘n’ Greet in August – no need to store supply kits at home over the summer. Best of all, a portion of the purchase price will go to ICS! Flyers will be sent home next week when the online ordering starts. Watch the ICS website for the link to order.
Serve-A-Thon/Sports Day T-Shirt: Reorder Now
Serve-A-Thon t-shirts are worn on Sports Day by every student. If your child has lost their t-shirt or has outgrown it, you can order one for $10. DEADLINE for orders is Friday, May 15. Spring Orchestra Assembly: Tomorrow, Friday, May 8
The Spring Orchestra Concert will be Friday, May 8 from 8:45 – 9:15 a.m. in the Worship Center. Come learn about the “Language of Music” with our school orchestra and music classes. Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade music classes will be playing in recorder ensembles with the orchestra.
Sports Awards Night: Thursday, May 14
The Sports Awards Program for the soccer, basketball, softball, lacrosse and cross country seasons will be Thursday, May 14 from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. in the ICS gym. We look forward to seeing you there as your child is recognized for participating in our sports program. There will be a dessert fellowship following the presentation of awards. Those with last names beginning with A-M please bring fruit and N-Z bring dessert. Dress is nice jeans (or better) and no t-shirts, please.
ICS Elementary Choir Schedule
Come enjoy the performance, “Mission Impossible,” on Friday, May 15, from 8:40 – 9:30 a.m. Rehearsals will be Monday, May 11 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 13 from 3:15 – 4:50 p.m.
Return Library Books Now
It’s that time again! All ICS library books not related to class assignments need to be returned now. The date for return of library books without a fine is Friday, May 15th. Overdue lists will be posted in all classrooms as a reminder to students, and parents will be emailed. Failure to return books results in a fine for the replacement cost of the book plus a $5.00 processing fee for each title. Unpaid fines also result in report cards being withheld. Questions? Lost and Found on Display May 19-21
Lost and Found will be on display Tuesday – Thursday, May 19-21. Please stop by the display tables to check for items your student may have lost. Items that have a name in them will be returned to their owner. All items not claimed by May 21 will be donated to Immanuel’s Hope Ministry.
Extended Care Reminder for Kindergarteners
Extended Care for kindergartners ends on the last day of kindergarten, Wednesday, June 3.
Last Fun Lunch: May 27
Wednesday, May 27 is the last Fun Lunch of the school year. Thank you to Lori Slattery, Fun Lunch Coordinator, for heading up the program. We couldn’t have this program without her and the great help from our volunteer parents.

Uniform Exchange Coming Soon: May 20-22
The Uniform Exchange will take place the week of Monday, May 18 in the breezeway. Used clothing in excellent condition may be brought in either Monday or Tuesday, May 18 & 19. ONLY Lands’ End uniform items will be offered for the Exchange, with the following exception: the plaid kilts and jumpers from Flynn & O’Hara are allowed for girls to wear. The actual exchange of uniforms will take place Wednesday – Friday, May 20-22. Volunteers are needed to help with the Exchange. Please contact Mary Sue Smith if you are interested.
Uniform Changes and Updates for 2015-16 School Year
Upper School Girls (grades 5-8): We will be adding new skirt and skort options to our LANDS’ END School Uniform website. These new options have been enthusiastically endorsed by a group of middle school girls! The current kilt from LANDS’ END has been discontinued, but existing kilts from both LANDS’ END and Flynn & O’Hara will be allowed for grades 5-8.
Lower School Girls (grades 1-4): There will be a new knit jumper offered, in Classic Navy. Our current plaid and navy jumper drop-waist options will continue to be available.
100 Verse Recitation
There is an opportunity at the end of the 4th quarter for students to quote additional verses to total 100 verses for the year. A special Bible selected the student is awarded for this achievement. Your student’s Bible teacher will provide information to the student about the 100 Verse Recitation. Please note that all additional verses must be printed and submitted to the Bible teacher by May 13. Students who want to recite 100 verses must complete them by June 1 for all grades. Please contact your student’s Bible teacher for additional information.
ICS Used Book Sale May 27-29
Best Book Sale Ever! Prices begin at 25 cents and the sale even includes some new books at 75% off retail. Book Sale dates are Wednesday – Friday, May 27-29 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. in the school library (Room C202). The sale features children’s and young Adult fiction, adult fiction and all ages non-fiction. Contact ICS Library staff by email or call 703.941.1220 for more details. Thank you for your support!

Annual Student vs Faculty Softball Game – May 19 at 3:45 p.m.
The annual Students vs. Staff Softball Game will be Tuesday, May 19th at 3:45 p.m.! Parents and students are welcome to come out and watch the teachers take on the ICS girls’ and boys’ softball teams.
Immunization Requirements for Current 5th Grade Students
Virginia Immunization requirements state that all rising 6th grade students must submit documentation of a Tdap booster (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) prior to entering 6th grade. If your child’s last tetanus booster was before August 2010, your child will need this Tdap booster before August 2015, when your student starts 6th grade. This shot may be listed as Td, Dtap, Tdap, or Adacel on the shot record. As soon as your child receives this booster shot, please provide a copy of the shot record to the school clinic. If your child has already received their Tdap booster, feel free to drop off the documentation at any time. “Anxiety in Children: Helping our Children Cope” Presentation at Oakwood School Tonight
We are excited to announce the final event of Oakwood’s 2014-15 speaker series:
“Anxiety in Children: Helping Our Children Cope” by Rolando J. Diaz, Ph.D. on Thursday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. This presentation will focus on the different ways in which anxiety can manifest in children. There is no charge for the event, but we do ask those planning to attend to register in advance at the Oakwood School website.

Lunch and Recess Help Still Needed
Parent volunteers are needed to help in the lunch room and at recess from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. daily (K-4: 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and grades 5-8: 12:45 p.m. -1:30 p.m.). While you help, you can eat lunch with your child, see them interact at recess and get to know fellow parents and your child’s classmates. We need regular volunteers to help one day a week or every other week. Your help gives our teachers a little break in the middle of their day to enjoy their lunch. Please contact Art Merkel, Lunchroom Supervisor or Todd Westfall, Recess Supervisor, to volunteer.

Hello, Mothers of Preschoolers! Our year is wrapping up! The last meeting for MOPS is Monday, May 11th, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Room A207.
