TerraNova Student Achievement Testing: April 24 - May 4

Students in grades 3-8 will participate in the annual TerraNova Testing April 24 – May 4.  There is no preparation needed except for a good breakfast, a good night’s rest and two No. 2 pencils.  It is extremely important that you arrive on time and do NOT arrange doctor appointments for this week.  Students with unexcused absences will be retested for a fee of at least $25 per student.  Please see the Parent/Student Handbook for absentee information.

Congratulations to Students Quoting 3rd Quarter Bible Verses

Attached is a list of students who have successfully quoted all of their verses for 3rd quarter. A list of students who have reached this milestone is also published in each classroom. Congratulations students! Keep practicing those verses for the 4th quarter recitation.

Chipotle ICS Fundraiser Night, April 28 from 4:00 to 8:30 p.m.

ICS is sponsoring a Chipotle Fundraiser Night at the Springfield Chipotle (7108 Old Keene Mill Road at Springfield Plaza) Tuesday, April 28. Tell your family & friends to mention “ ICS” to the cashier at time of purchase or bring the flyer along.  50% of all proceeds will be donated to the 8th grade graduating class.   This event is a fun ICS family night out & helps raise money for the 8th graders to use toward their class gift to the school (last year it was the benches in front of the school and the year before it was the playground swings). Immunization Requirements for 5th Grade Students

Virginia Immunization requirements state that all rising 6th grade students must submit documentation of a Tdap booster (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) prior to entering 6th grade.  If your child’s last tetanus booster was before August 2010, your child will need this Tdap booster before August 2015, when your student starts 6th grade.  This shot may be listed as Td, Dtap, Tdap, or Adacel on the shot record.   As soon as your child receives this booster shot, please provide a copy of the shot record to the school clinic.  If your child has already received their Tdap booster, feel free to drop off the documentation at any time. For more information, please see the document that was sent home with your student’s 3rd quarter report card, or contact the school clinic at 703-941-1220 or via email.

Capital Athletic Conference Track Meet: Monday, April 27

The annual Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) track meet will be held again this year at Langley School on Monday, April 27.  We need lots of parent volunteers to be drivers, timers, ribbon writers and help getting the kids to the right events.  No training is required and you will receive Parent Service Hours for volunteering.  Students participating in the track meet can be picked up at Langley or at ICS at approximately 5:30 p.m. You may volunteer for the day or any amount of time that you are available.  Please contact Wayne Davis, our Athletic Director, as soon as possible.  It is a premier event for the CAC and is lots of fun for the kids and adult volunteers.

ICS Talent Show Next Friday, May 1 - All Welcome

All are welcome to attend the 4th Annual ICS Talent Show. There will be an all-school assembly on Friday, May 1 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the Worship Center to see performances from students in grades 4-8. You may even see some staff show off their skills! Parents, family members and friends from all grade levels are welcome to attend what is sure to be an exciting time. Please contact Lauren Umble if you have questions.

ICS Elementary Choir Schedule

Come enjoy the performance, “Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord“, on Friday, May 15, 8:40 – 9:30 a.m. Rehearsals will be Monday, May 4 & 11 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 13 from 3:15 – 4:50 p.m.

Spring Orchestra Assembly: Friday, May 8

The Spring Orchestra Concert will be Friday, May 8 from 8:45 – 9:15 a.m. in the Worship Center.  Come learn about the “Language of Music” with our school orchestra and music classes.  Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade music classes will be playing in recorder ensembles with the orchestra.

Extended Care Reminder for Kindergarteners

Extended Care for kindergartners ends on the last day of kindergarten, Wednesday, June 3.

Parent Service Hours Due May 15

Please record your Parent Service Hours before May 15. To do so, log into ParentsWeb, click on Family Information and then your name tab. Click on Service Hours, then “ADD” on the first line for the current school year. Select your service description, enter the hours, note the task and the contact person (in “Verified By”) for whom you worked. Parents in grades K-8 should serve 20 hours total. Parents who enrolled their children after September should pro-rate their required hours at the rate of 2 hours per month for grades K-8. Single parents serve half the number of required hours. Parents who have not turned in their hours by the end of the school year will be billed for the unserved hours. Please contact Sharon Dotson if you have any questions.

Uniform Exchange Coming Soon: May 20-22

The Uniform Exchange will take place the week of Monday, May 18 in the breezeway. Used clothing in excellent condition may be brought in either Monday or Tuesday, May 18 & 19 . ONLY Lands’ End uniform items will be offered for the Exchange, with these exceptions: the plaid kilts and jumpers from Flynn & O’Hara are allowed for girls to wear. The actual exchange of uniforms will take place Wednesday – Friday, May 20 -22. Volunteers are needed to help with the Exchange. Please contact Mary Sue Smith if you are interested.

Uniform Changes and Updates for 2015-16 School Year

Upper School Girls (grades 5-8):  We will be adding new skirt and skort options to our LANDS’ END School Uniform website.  These new options have been enthusiastically endorsed by a group of middle school girls!  The current kilt from LANDS’ END has been discontinued, but existing kilts from both LANDS’ END and Flynn & O’Hara will be allowed for grades 5-8.

Lower School Girls (grades 1-4): There will be a new knit jumper offered, in Classic Navy. Our current plaid and navy jumper dropped-waist options will continue to be available.

100 Verse Recitation

There is an opportunity at the end of the 4th quarter for students to quote additional verses to total 100 verses for the year. A special Bible, which the student selects, is awarded for this achievement. Your student’s Bible teacher will provide information to the student about the 100 verses recitation. Please note that all additional verses must be printed and submitted to the Bible teacher by May 13. Students who want to recite 100 verses must complete them by June 1 for all grades. Please contact your student’s Bible teacher for additional information.

Sports Awards Night: Thursday, May 14

The Sports Awards Program for soccer, basketball, softball, lacrosse and cross country seasons will be Thursday, May 14 from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. in the ICS gym. We look forward to seeing you there as your child is recognized for participating in our sports program. There will be a dessert fellowship following the presentation of awards. Those with last names beginning with A-M please bring fruit and N-Z bring dessert. Dress is nice jeans (or better) and no t-shirts.

Used Book Sale: May 27-29

The ICS Library will hold a Used Book Sale on Wednesday, May 27- Friday, May 29 in the school library during school hours. Hundreds of children’s books, DVDs, young adult and adult Christian fiction will be available! Tell your friends, then come browse, buy & save!

“Anxiety in Children: Helping our Children Cope” Presentation at Oakwood School on May 7

We are excited to announce the final event of Oakwood’s 2014-15 speaker series:  “Anxiety in Children:  Helping Our Children Cope” by Rolando J. Diaz, Ph.D. on Thursday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. This presentation will focus on the different ways in which anxiety can manifest in children. There is no charge for the event, but we do ask those planning to attend to register in advance at the Oakwood School website.

Upcoming Alumni Events – May 21 & June 4

  • College and Career Alumni: Join us for an evening of BBQ and backyard games at Phil, Diane, Jessie and Jackie Bond’s house, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $10 and those who RSVP here by May 8 will receive an ICS alumni t-shirt!
  • Current High School Students: ICS Classes of 2011-2014 are invited back to campus to join us for lunch starting at 11:00 a.m. and then compete in the annual alumni vs. 8thgrade volleyball game on Sports Day, June 4. Please RSVP here.

Faculty Positions for 2015–2016

Immanuel Christian School is now accepting applications for the following teaching positions: 2nd grade and 5th grade, Elementary Science (grades 3-6), Middle School Math, Middle School Language Arts, 5th-8th Spanish and Athletic Director/Boys’ P.E.  All positions, except Spanish, are full-time and require an education degree and classroom experience. ICS Basketball Camp: June 15-19

Mark your calendars! ICS will again host a summer basketball camp from Monday – Friday, June 15-19. Camp will be held in the ICS Gym from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Camp is for both boys and girls entering 4th – 9th grades. Fill out form here and return to Reception along with payment.

We Collect Box Tops

Bring your Box Tops in a Ziploc bag labeled with your child(s) name and grade to Reception and make sure you check the dates on the Box Tops as expired dates will not be counted in the totals.  Remember to sign up and support ICS here.  Once you register, you will have access to coupons for box top products and have the opportunity to play fun games and earn eBox Tops for our school. Lunch and Recess Help Still Needed

Parent volunteers are needed to help in the lunch room and at recess from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. daily (K-4: 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and grades 5-8: 12:45 p.m. -1:30 p.m.). While you help, you can eat lunch with your child, see them interact at recess and get to know fellow parents and your child’s classmates. We need regular volunteers to help one day a week or every other week. Your help gives our teachers a little break in the middle of their day to enjoy their lunch. Please contact Art Merkel, Lunchroom Supervisor or Todd Westfall, Recess Supervisor, to volunteer.

MOPS – Meeting May 11

Hello, Mothers of Preschoolers!  Our year is wrapping up!  The last meeting for MOPS is Monday, May 11th, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Room A207.  Speaker Dee Dee Collins is speaking on “The Courage to be Too Much”.  Dinner and dessert will be provided.  Bring a friend and enjoy the fellowship!  After the summer break, our next meeting is Monday, September 14, 2015.
