Re-Enrollment Coming Mid-February

AUTOMATIC RE-ENROLLMENT for 2015-2016 will take place in February and deposits will be collected through FACTS in March. Watch for IMPORTANT details in the re-enrollment packet coming home with your child in mid-February.

2015-2016 Sibling Enrollment Online

We are already receiving online applications for new students for next school year. ICS families should now complete applications for new siblings. Click here to apply. You may add this information to your current online account or create a new one if you have not done so in the past. You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Contact Lauren Umble, Enrollment Manager, if you have questions.

Financial Aid

Applications for tuition assistance are processed online by FACTS. All required documentation is due by April 17. There is a processing fee of $30 for this service. Families who are currently receiving aid should receive information in their re-enrollment package. Please remember that a new online application must be completed each year you request tuition assistance. Details are available on our website under Tuition and Financial Aid.

Farewell For Now Mrs. Waldroup/Welcome Mrs. Joyce

We are pleased to welcome back Deshua Joyce as the long-term substitute for 7th grade Language Arts. She will be here until early May as Ashley Waldroup takes maternity leave. Deshua is well-qualified with a BA and MA in Speech (English) Education and was a former teacher and director of our ICS Discovery Program.

Tributes Needed for 20th Anniversaries & Retirements

We encourage you to send a word of appreciation for the following faculty and staff members for their faithful service to Immanuel Christian School.  Your message can include memorable moments, photos, as well as expressions of gratitude.

  • 20th Anniversary Tributes:  Help us honor Diane Carnahan, Wayne Davis, Ann Marsh, and Ronda Wallis for their 20 years of faithful service to Immanuel Christian School.  Click here to write a tribute to them.  Please submit these to us by March 23.  There will be an assembly the morning of April 20th for students and parents to recognize their service.  Memory albums with your messages will be presented at this assembly. Watch for further details about the assembly in the weeks to come.
  • Retirement Tributes:  We are celebrating the retirements of Mary Jo Copeland and Wayne Davis in June.  We welcome your tributes for their faithful service. The deadline for these tributes is May 27. Please click here to send your words of appreciation.

Weather Delays/Cancellations Update

When it comes to delays and/or cancellations because of weather, our general rule is that we follow Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) for delays/closures. However, in unique weather situations we may differ from what FCPS will do. For instance, if the sidewalks are covered in snow (so students can’t walk to school) or if the weather is extremely cold, we may have a full day of school or a different delay than FCPS. It is important that everyone is signed up through ParentAlert to get the ICS text, phone call and email about school delays/closures. If you have not been receiving the alerts, please check your Parent Alert preferences in the Update Web Form in ParentsWeb. Note: Our Facebook page and website will also have an announcement about delays/closing.

Just Around the Corner

Attention parents of rising kindergarten through 2nd grade students! Save the date for “Just Around the Corner” on Friday, February 20, from 8:45 – 10:00 a.m. in the Terrace Room. Learn more about the developmental philosophy at ICS and preview what is coming up in the next grade. Childcare is provided, and advance reservations are needed by February 13. Kindergarten Readiness Seminar

Join ICS and IBC on Tuesday, March 17 from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. in the ICS Library for a Kindergarten Readiness Seminar. This is a great opportunity to learn more about different educational philosophies, what kindergarten teachers look for on the first day of school and activities to do at home to prepare for kindergarten. Limited childcare available. RSVP by March 9.

Preventing Power Struggles and Encouraging Cooperation

Oakwood School is having Parent Coach, Meghan Leahy, speak on Thursday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. As a parent coach, Meghan’s goal is to help parents end the frustrating power struggles with their children and bring cooperation, lightness and laughter into the home. Megan is the parenting expert for Discovery Fit and Health and writes a regular parenting column in the Washington Post. There is no charge for the event, but please register in advance. Tardy Policy

Students are to be dropped off at school no later than 8:20 a.m.  Our teachers pick up their classes from the gym at 8:20 a.m. so students can unpack their belongings and start their day in a timely manner.  If you are dropping your child off after 8:20 a.m., please come in to the school reception area and sign your child(ren) in for the day.  When students arrive late they are missing important instructional time and it is disruptive to the teaching process.  Tardies are recorded by our teachers and will be reflected on a student’s report card. Students are to be dropped off at school no later than 8:20 a.m. Our teachers pick up their classes from the gym at 8:20 a.m. so students can unpack their belongings and start their day in a timely manner. Note from Clinic

We are seeing a large number of students at school with fevers, sore throats and upset stomachs. If your child is complaining about any of the above symptoms, please be sure to take their temperature before going to school. Your child is not allowed to come to school if they have vomited or had diarrhea within the last 24 hours. They must also stay home if they have had a fever of 100 degrees (or higher) within the last 24 hours. They may return to school after being fever-free for 24 hours without being on fever reducing medication (Tylenol or Motrin). Thank you in advance for doing your part in keeping our kids from spreading illness.

The Gospel of John Presented at Immanuel Bible Church

Talk about a bonus verse!  Bring your whole family on Saturday evening, March 28, 6:00 pm.   Immanuel is hosting The Gospel of John, presented by Marquis Laughlin.  Marquis will do a word for word performance of the passion story, from John Chapter 11 through the end of the book.  This will be an outstanding event, both inspiring and evangelical.  Tickets are only $5 per person THROUGH FEBRUARY.  After that the price goes up to $7 a person.   Tickets may be purchased on the Immanuel webpage, or in the Immanuel Christian Bookstore. Scrip Gift Card Fundraiser Ending

ICS will not be taking future orders for gift cards; however, we still have a large supply of gift cards available in the school office including Giant, Regal Movie Tickets, iTunes, Starbucks, Panera and many other restaurants and retailers. Come by the main school office and support ICS by purchasing these cards before they are gone.

Elementary Spring Choir

Many have asked why choir has not started yet! As evidenced by recent weeks, two hour delays and school cancellations make it almost impossible to learn the music and script. Choir will begin March 2 at 1:30 p.m. when the weather is more predictable. “Mission Impossible” has wonderful music, a great message and fun costumes. Choir is open to 3rd – 5th graders. Substitutes Needed

Lunch and Recess Help Needed

Parent volunteers are needed to help in the lunch room and at recess from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. daily (K-4: 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and grades 5-8: 12:45 p.m. -1:30 p.m.). While you help, you can eat lunch with your child, see them interact at recess and get to know fellow parents and your child’s classmates. We are in need of regular volunteers to help one day a week or every other week. Your help gives our teachers a little break in the middle of their day to enjoy their lunch. Please contact Art Merkel, Lunchroom Supervisor or Todd Westfall, Recess Supervisor, if you would like to volunteer.

MOPS

The next MOPS meeting is Monday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Room A207. Bring a friend for this fun night of fellowship; her first night is free! The topic is “Courage to be Passionate” with Tim and Lisa Fisher. We will also have a children’s book exchange.

EMOMS

Calling all EMOMS (Moms of Elementary Kids)! Join us for our next meeting on Wednesday, February 4 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Room A207. Tricia Porth (mom of three teens and local Bible Study Fellowship teaching leader) will be sharing with us on the topic of “Truly Gifted: Seeing our Children through God’s Eyes.” Come enjoy this time to recharge, reflect and reconnect with moms in the same stage of life. Women’s Retreat: March 6-8, 2015
