K-8 ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS & CLUBS

Our student competitions are designed to provide incentives for students to develop skills necessary for Christian leadership, facilitate the learning process, and to help develop composure and confidence in each student.

ACSI MATH OLYMPICS

The ACSI Math Olympics is held annually for students in 3rd-8th grades. Participants compete in either the Computation or the Reasoning category. The objective of this competition is to support student interest in math and provide an opportunity for fellowship with students from other Christian schools who share a love of mathematics. Students are recognized for their achievements and are given the opportunity to glorify God through their mathematical abilities.

MATHCOUNTS©

The MathCounts Competition Program is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through advanced problem-solving challenges. District competitions are held each Spring throughout the United States and abroad, with winners going on to compete in the national MathCounts competition.

REEL MATH CHALLENGE

The Reel Math Challenge is an innovative program encouraging students to use current technology to film, edit and produce creative videos about math problems. The videos are posted each spring and the public is encouraged to vote for the most creative video. Finalists present their videos at the national MathCounts competition.

CARDEROCK NAVAL SURFACE WARFARE CENTER COMPETITION

Teams participate in three paper-and-pencil challenge rounds in the morning followed by a tour of the facilities where Navy engineers use math every day. A Countdown Round is organized like the national competition, with one mathlete emerging at the final buzzer. The best way to inspire kids in math is “to introduce them to others who are passionate about problem-solving, whether they are students from other schools or professionals doing jobs they love,” says Lou DiGioia, executive director of MATHCOUNTS. “At Carderock, the students get the best of both worlds.”

ROCKETRY CLUB

As a registered club in the Team America Rocket Challenge (TARC), the ICS Rocketry Club meets once a month to design, build, and fly model rockets. The TARC competition is a nation-wide event that takes place in Great Meadows, Virginia in May. Participants in the final competition qualify through TARC-monitored test flights of a rocket that has been designed and built by the students of the club. Each year, ICS has a team of students who participate in the TARC event. More information on TARC can be found at  http://www.rocketcontest.org/.

As the popularity of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities increases, ICS hopes to field additional teams in future years.  Other STEM activities planned for the future include Lego Robotics Club and a school-wide Invention Convention to challenge students’ creativity and scientific/engineering abilities.

YEARBOOK

The Messenger is a bound yearbook produced by the high school editorial staff, with the assistance of select MS students. The senior graduates are honored in the book with individual pictures and write-ups. Each homeroom has a class picture and each grade level its own page.

The Messenger staff are chosen at the end of the school year and they work closely with the Faculty Advisor. Middle School photography students are taught basic photography skills and submit photographs representing various class activities throughout the year.
